Traveling with our dogs is a good way to create unforgettable moments with the entire family. Plus, dogs love traveling and being part of the human adventures. So why not take your dog on a motorhome trip with you? ?
Before the trip:
Before taking your dog with you on holidays in general, you should go to the vet and make sure all your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date. During the trip, take your dog’s passport with you and his first aid kit.
Make sure that the campsite, you are going to stay in, accepts animals. If some campsites accept animals and even have spaces dedicated to them to play and walk, some don’t accept animals at all and can be really strict about it. If you are sure that the campsite you are going to accepts animals then again don’t forget to put a collar on your dog’s neck and if possible a medal with your name and phone number on it in case your dog gets lost in the campsite.
On the way:
On the way, make sure your animal is not wandering freely in the vehicle. Even if he is very quiet in his basket, you never know if the next turn is not going to be too violent for your canine friend, so I might be better to have a security belt.
Dogs need routine, and they need to feel at home to not be disturbed. A good idea would be to take their usual toys and usual basket with them, so they don’t feel too lost. One other good thing for your dog routine would be to feed him at the same time as you usually do at home, so that he feels at home.
At the campsite:
Once in the campsite, make sure your dog doesn’t stay too long in the vehicle, firstly because dogs need to walk around and smell the place they are arrived to but also because the temperature in the vehicle can rise really quickly. If it’s the first time you are taking your dog to a campsite, make sure he understands that he has to stay around your site and not go on the neighbors site.
If your dog is used to go and run in your garden, you might have to make him understand that when you open the vehicle’s door it doesn’t necessarily mean that he can go outside on his own. All this depends on his habits at home and it depends on each dog. If your dog is particularly noisy and is barking at the slightest movement, it might be a good idea to choose a site a bit apart other sites.
