Are you planning a motorhome trip to Spain and looking for the most beautiful spots? Discover in this article our exclusive recommendations for successful wild camping in Spain!
Is wild camping allowed in Spain?
Officially, wild camping is prohibited in Spain. However, in practice, the legal situation is more complex than it seems. It is in fact the Autonomous Communities and municipalities that decide whether or not to allow wild camping in their territories, making the legislation unclear and different depending on the region you visit.
Once you have decided where you want to go wild camping in Spain, the best option is to check the regulations in force before your trip.
Keep in mind the distinction between these three key concepts:
- Wild camping (Acampada libre): it involves a permanent setup (tent, awning deployed, leveling blocks, outdoor chairs). It is officially prohibited throughout the country, especially in urban areas and protected natural spaces.
- Bivouacking (Vivac): in Spain, true bivouacking often means sleeping under the stars (without shelter). It may be tolerated in certain mountain areas or natural parks, often only between sunset and sunrise, and sometimes with authorization. As soon as a shelter (tent, tarp, hammock) is set up, the law often considers it as wild camping.
- Parking: a motorhome is considered parked (and not camping) if its wheels are on the ground without stabilizers and no element extends beyond the vehicle’s perimeter. In this case, you can sleep inside legally wherever parking is allowed.
Legislation by region
Regions where wild camping is tolerated and/or allowed under certain conditions:
- Basque Country: regulations generally prohibit wild camping, but in non-urban natural areas, authorization must be requested from the town hall.
- Catalonia: wild camping is generally prohibited, but occasional permits may be granted, particularly in mountainous areas or certain natural spaces, under strict conditions (limited duration, designated areas).
- Canary Islands: it is possible to wild camp, but you must submit a prior request (often several days in advance) to the Vice-Ministry of the Environment, specifying the locations you plan to visit.
- Cantabria: wild camping is in principle prohibited, but certain forms of bivouacking may be temporarily tolerated in specific areas.
Regions where wild camping is prohibited:
- Aragon: regulations on wild camping are quite restrictive, and decree 61/2006 prohibits the practice. Fines are particularly high, ranging from 600 to 6,000 euros.
- Galicia: wild camping is also prohibited outside of tourist facilities provided by the Galician authorities.
Risks and fines
Failure to comply with the rules exposes you to fines generally ranging from €100 to €3,000 (or even more in certain regions and protected areas). Checks are frequent along the Mediterranean coast and in national parks, sometimes using helicopters to spot offenders.
Guidelines for staying and wild camping with peace of mind
- FIRE BAN: Spain is extremely vulnerable to forest fires. Fires are strictly prohibited and the use of stoves is often regulated or even banned during dry periods.
- Local awareness: beware of Ramblas (dry riverbeds that can fill instantly in case of rain) and hunting areas marked by black and white signs (Coto privado de Caza).
- Stay discreet (“Parking mode”): do not take out any outdoor equipment to avoid being fined for “camping”.
- Favor inland areas: coastal and tourist areas are the most monitored.
- Respect the environment: take all your waste with you.
