Who hasn’t dreamed of traveling to this superb region of Italy, where the pictures of lakes and mountains are worthy of a postcard? So get your vehicle ready and discover our itinerary to visit the most beautiful lakes of the Dolomites by motorhome!
Alleghe
The town of Alleghe boasts a splendid lake, making it the region’s main attraction.
A two-hour circular walk allows you to enjoy the view. In the village, inhabited by just over 1,000 people, you’ll find the cable car that takes you to the north side of the Civetta.
There are itineraries to suit all tastes and levels of difficulty, on foot or by mountain bike. Some lead to refuges where you can enjoy splendid panoramic views and sample excellent local mountain cuisine such as Orz soup or Strangolapreti alla trentina (bread and spinach gnocchi), as well as polenta and game dishes, to be paired with Trentino red wines or excellent craft beers.
In the Alleghe area, there are numerous other alpine lakes and rivers that form waterfalls such as the Cascata Ru del Rialt, easily accessible by hiking trail.
🚐📍 Where to park your motorhome?
To park your motorhome, you can use the Rocca Pietore parking, which is free of charge.
Alternatively, you can go to the Alleghe service area (for a fee). Or head for the Camping Alleghe Resort in Masarè.
Misurina
Situated at an altitude of 1754 metres, it is the largest lake in the Dolomites. In winter, the ice and deep snow make it ideal for the Italy Polo Challenge polo matches, which have been held here for several years. In summer, the lake is ideal for relaxing along its shores or along the easy ring road. The walk is also suitable for children.
Misurina is the perfect place for hikers and trekkers. In fact, from the lake there are numerous paths leading to both Cadini di Misurina and the Tre Cime. Or take the chairlift up to Col de Varda. From here, you can continue on foot to the Città di Capri refuge.
You can also take the Tre Cime road with your motorhome, which leads to the parking near the Auronzo refuge. This option is subject to a charge of €45.00 per vehicle. From here, you can walk to the top and back. Another excursion on foot or by jeep is from the Misurina parking to Monte Piana, home of the open-air First World War Museum.
🚐📍 Where can you park your motorhome?
You can park at the Misurina service area at the top of the lake. This is a pay parking without electricity but where you can empty the waste water of your motorhome.
There is also the Camping alla Baita, which is very simple but has electricity and sanitary facilities.
Dobbiaco
The walk around the Dobbiaco lake is very easy and pleasant. In winter, this road is used by the cross-country ski track of the famous Dobbiaco Cortina and Cortina Dobbiaco race, which follows the old railroad line.
This old track, which can also be ridden on mountain bikes in summer, is very beautiful in the direction of Cortina. In fact, it crosses the entire Rienza valley.
🚐📍 Where can you park your motorhome?
You can park close to the lake at Camping Toblacher See. This is a very relaxing spot as it’s right by the lake and in the woods.
In Dobbiaco, you can park for a few hours in the Dobbiaco parking.
Anterselva
This magnificent lake lies at an altitude of 1642 metres in the Aurina valley. It is considered one of the most beautiful in Val Pusteria.
In summer, the route around the lake highlights the beauty of the landscape and the peaks of the Vedrette di Ries, which dominate the valley. A very easy route, it is also suitable for baby carriages and people with reduced mobility.
At the end of the lake at the bottom of the valley, we recommend stopping for a snack or lunch at Platz am See. Or, if you like walking, you can continue on to Refuge Genziana. Here you can sample the excellent charcuterie and cheese plates and typical Tyrolean dishes.
🚐📍 Where can you park your motorhome?
You can park at Camping Antholz, popular with travelers in summer and winter alike. There’s also the Rasun Anterselva parking, where you can park for a few hours to visit the lake.
Auronzo di Cadore
From Misurina you can descend to Lake Auronzo on Dolomite Regional Route 48, crossing the valley.
Along the way, you’ll see small buildings scattered all over the place, giving you that characteristic view of the region. Some are very old and have been renovated. Others have become second homes or summer rentals.
This road leads to the village of Auronzo. The town overlooks the artificial lake with its sparkling emerald-green waters, where the peaks of the Dolomites like to be reflected.
It’s a well-known tourist resort, ideal for those traveling with the family. In winter, you can ski on Monte Agudo, and in summer, you can relax on the banks. There’s also the Tre Cime adventure park.
Auronzo is a classic destination for a Dolomite lakes itinerary by motorhome, both in winter and summer!
🚐 📍Where can you park your motorhome?
In Auronzo there’s the Taiarezze service area (chargeable), in the north of the lake.
You also have the option of staying at Camping Europa, which has 90 pitches for motorhomes and caravans.
Sorapis
Lake Sorapis is a jewel of rare beauty located at an altitude of 1923 meters in an exceptional natural setting.
This lake is not accessible by motorhome. The best solution is to stop at the Tre Croci pass, halfway between Cortina and Misurina. From here, continue on foot along trail 215, following the signs for the Vandelli refuge. Be prepared, as there are places where the path is less passable once you reach the summit. You’ll then come face to face with a splendid panoramic view of the valley. Keep going until you see Lake Misurina and the three peaks. Take a day, as this is an excursion that easily lasts 4 hours. But it’s worth it!
Braies lake
Let’s finish our itinerary with the last of the Dolomite lakes to be visited by motorhome: the Braies lake!
Situated in the valley of the same name, on the Val Pusteria side, the lake originates from a landslide dam and lies at almost 1500m above sea level. It attracts thousands of tourists every year, which unfortunately creates traffic problems and overcrowding.
Measures have been taken to protect the nature of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. In summer, the road from Ferrara to Lake Braies is closed to traffic from 10:00 to 15:00. There is a bus service and a Monguelfo – Lago di Braies shuttle bus. Trail no. 1 leads from Ferrara in an hour and a half’s walk to Lake Braies.
The view from the lake to the Dolomite peaks is fantastic. In winter, it’s possible to walk on the lake thanks to the ice cap. In summer, to enjoy the scenery, we suggest renting boats.
From here, you’ll be able to see the panorama of the southern shore of the Croda del Becco, whose 2810m altitude is reflected in the lake. Numerous trails are available in this valley for hiking and mountain biking.
🚐📍 Where can you park your motorhome?
You can park at the Braies parking, not far from the lake. Parking is subject to a charge, and toilets are available nearby. The cost is €20 for 24 hours (non-divisible). We recommend that you arrive after 3:00 p.m. so that you can spend the night in peace.
The nearest campsite is Camping Olympia in Monguelfo, from where you can take the bus directly to the lake.
❄️ If you want to plan an itinerary to visit the lakes of the Dolomites by motorhome in winter, it’s a good idea to bring both clothes and equipment for the motorhome.
