What is Easter?
If for many of us Easter rhymes with chocolate eggs, family celebrations and moments of happiness, its origin is primarily religious. Indeed, Easter is one of the most important holidays in Christianity as it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Did you know that? Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following the full spring moon, which is why the date changes every year! And this year, Easter will be starting around the week of the second Sunday, April 9!
In most European countries, the Easter vacation is a big celebration. It’s like a big happy reunion in a camper, but with more chocolate than you’ll ever eat in your life! Campers go on roadtrips to beautiful countries to get together with their best friends and family. Happy places with happy and hungry people, what a great day to spend!
Over the years, the religious aspect of Easter has faded away to become a more commercial holiday and above all a time to enjoy with your family and escape for a weekend in the heart of the best destinations in France by motorhome for Easter!
How is Easter celebrated in the rest of Europe?
In France, church bells stop ringing three days before Easter Sunday. Tradition says that the bells return on Easter Sunday and distribute all kinds of chocolate on their way, which children collect from the gardens. It is also customary for families to get together on Easter Sunday and enjoy a nice leg of lamb with green beans!
In Germany it is not the bells but the rabbit, symbolising fertility and renewal, that brings the chocolates.
In the UK, British children (and even adults!) create decorated hats and participate in the Easter Bonnet Parade. This tradition also exists in the USA!
In Italy, children also go in search of eggs, only they are not made of chocolate and contain gifts. In Italy, people usually celebrate this day with a picnic with friends! There is a famous saying: “Natale con i tuoi, Pasqua con chi vuoi” (“Christmas with the family, Easter with whoever you want”)!
In Spain, people celebrate Holy Week. There are several typical symbols of this week, such as the women dressed in mantillas, the traditional Spanish costume, and the nazarenos, who are the faithful of the different brotherhoods who accompany the icons in religious processions. These processions are organised all over the country but the most popular are those in Andalusia!
In Portugal, in the villages, the priest walks along the paths dotted with flowers and meets the inhabitants in their homes after mass. The “Mona”, a traditional brioche, is eaten as well as chocolates!
In Prague, Czech Republic, there is a special Easter market and a rabbit jumping race!
In Poland, Easter begins on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. A holy menu is prepared and the tables are decorated with hard-boiled eggs that can be eaten. On Easter Monday, Poles also have a custom of sprinkling water on each other to celebrate friendship.
In the Scandinavian countries, Easter is celebrated religiously but also symbolises the return of spring. In Sweden, there is a tradition that is very reminiscent of Halloween: children dress up and go trick-or-treating in the homes of the locals! In Norway, the custom is to get up early on Easter Monday to see the sunrise. The Finns sow seeds of perennial ryegrass and place decorated eggs on them when the plants have grown.
