Let’s discover a motorhome trip in Andalusia with Michèle and her family!
Hello to all our fellow travelers,
It is not easy to find a place to talk about because every place has particular characteristics and reinforces our idea that it was a good decision to come and visit.
As you might know, I created a website where I share my discoveries and itineraries. I’ve lately noticed that Andalusia was a destination people liked, so I have decided to tell you more about this splendid Spanish region.
Just a brief aside about the itinerary. After numerous trips, I’ve tried all different possibilities in order to see which one was leading to best visits.
1 – The ‘day to day itinerary’
2 – No itinerary, ‘go with the flow’
3 – No planning, just a overall view
4 – Planning in advance, researches in books and on the internet, etc.
Actually, it’s solution number 4 – Planning in advance and researches – that I chose to explore Andalusia by motorhome.
I chose this one for two things. Firstly I realized that I was missing outstanding locations, and sometimes they were really close to me. And secondly, significant feature, the early preparation of the trip makes me feel already on holidays, wow! It makes things interesting, a one month trip, two months of preparation and when I’m back, I work on the website.. do the math on it ? So let’s go, follow us, we’re going in Andalusia by motorhome!
We went away for 15 days, our place of destination was at Riotinto in Spain… 1,800 km away ( ≈ 1120 miles away). It took us 4 days to go down, by taking our time. With the children, we have to make stopovers and stop early on the evening. And, we are on vacations and on the way there are beautiful things to see.
Here we are, arrived to our first surprising and astonishing place of destination : Minas de Riotinto. ‘A red river, extraterrestrial landscapes, a 200 meters walk under the ground and a steam train from the nineteenth century which will lead us… on Mars. This mine train will then lead us, in relative comfort, along 22 km, to a spectacular landscape along the Rio Tinto reddened by the iron ore.
In the mining museum, you will see the history one the mines and of metallurgy but also of the beautiful twentieth century locomotive.
Andalusia, it’s Andalusian music, its folklore, the sun and its white villages. At the turn of a wild site, you will discover lost villages on a mountain.
After Riotinto, Ronda is going to amaze us. Essential step on the path of Andalusia, Ronda reveals a unique architectural heritage.
The arenas still host bullfights, the Mondragon Palade is a must-see as well as the Arabic Baths remarkably well-preserved. If you have kids, you can also visit the Museo Del Bandolero.
We then went to Juzcar ‘the Smurf Village’. The entire village has been painted in blue for the purposes of the shoot of the Smurf movie. Repaint the entire village in blue, it’s 50 painters, 200 hours of work and 5000 litre of paint.
Before going to Guadix, we chose to stop and spend a night à 2,300 meter altitude on the Sierra Nevada parksite.
We were right next to Grenada. But in order to visit the Alhambra, you have to book months in advance and by motorhome it’s not easy. So we had a look at pictures and websites about it. But next time, for sure.
Guadix, the not-to-be-missed Guadix and its underground world are inland. Its inhabitants are extremely friendly and are showing there house proudly. The tufa is a tender and chalky rock. Similar to chalk. In contact with air, the rock harden itself and all that is left is to paint it in white.
The Guadix cathedral, situated outside, lets you discover an extremely rich inside of a wonderful beauty. It has been constructed between the sixteenth and the eighteenth century.
Out itinerary in Andalusia by motorhome ends at Ubeda.
The Ubera region is composed of many olive groves, and when you think olive groves, you think olive oil.
We were at Ubeda during the Easter celebrations, the processions are spectacular and the fervour emanating from it did not leave us indifferent.
Here was, again a wonderful and well-prepared trip. Of course, some will say that we did not visit such or such place. Actually, next time we will go in Andalusia by motorhome, we will do a different itinerary. Or, I might take the tickets to visit the Alhambra in Grenada.
I invite you to explore my website where you will be able to find differtns stopovers and motorhomes parks to visit the different surroundings. You can follow this link to my trip in Andalusia by motorhome on CaraMaps where I indicate the places we stopped to.
See you very soon! And don’t forget to follow us this summer on my website for a trip in Norway, Lapland and on the Lofoten Isles.
