🧭 FAQ
Albania is without a doubt the new favourite destination for motorhome travellers and vanlife enthusiasts! Still largely untouched by mass tourism just a few years ago, this small Balkan country is now attracting more and more road trip lovers looking for authenticity, freedom and wide-open spaces.
Why visit Albania by motorhome?
🌊 For its paradise beaches
- With nearly 450 km of coastline along the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea, Albania is full of stunning beaches and hidden coves. Perfect for enjoying postcard-worthy scenery far away from the summer crowds!
⛰️ For its endless mountains
- This mountainous country is made up of nearly 70% mountain landscapes. Adventure lovers can even head to Mount Korab, the highest peak in Albania, reaching an altitude of 2,764 metres!
💸 Because it is still an affordable destination
- Albania remains one of the most budget-friendly countries in Europe for a motorhome road trip. Fuel, restaurants, campsites and activities are all relatively inexpensive. A great reason to explore the country before it becomes one of Europe’s must-visit destinations!

🚍 Driving regulations and road rules in Albania for motorhomes
Basic rules
- For foreign travellers, a valid national driving licence is accepted in Albania. To drive a motorhome, a standard category B licence is sufficient unless the vehicle exceeds 3.5 tonnes.
- It is mandatory to carry an international insurance certificate (“Green Card”). You can obtain it from your insurance company or directly at the Albanian border if necessary.
- To rent a car in Albania, drivers generally need to be at least 23 years old.
- Many roads are still in poor condition, so extra caution is required when driving a motorhome. Local driving habits can also sometimes feel unpredictable.
- It is mandatory to drive with your headlights on both day and night.
Speed limits in Albania
The speed limits in Albania for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are as follows:
- 40 km/h – Urban areas
- 80 km/h – Rural roads
- 90 km/h – Express roads
- 110 km/h – Motorways (90 km/h for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes)
Be aware that speed cameras and police checks are frequent in Albania, so stay vigilant!
⚠️ Some mountain roads can be winding and poorly maintained. It is recommended to adapt your speed even when legal speed limits allow faster driving. Driving styles can sometimes be quite aggressive, especially in large cities and on coastal roads during summer.
Tip: try to travel during daylight hours whenever possible in order to better anticipate road conditions and potential animals crossing the road.
Wild camping in Albania
Albania is particularly popular among motorhome and van travellers because of the sense of freedom it offers. Wild camping is generally tolerated, especially in rural areas and along the coast, as long as you respect the environment and local communities.
However, camping is prohibited in certain places, including:
- national parks and protected natural reserves,
- near official or institutional buildings,
- on private property without the owner’s permission.
In Albania, there is also a real distinction between wild camping and simply sleeping discreetly inside your vehicle:
- wild camping usually means setting up visibly outside the vehicle (chairs, table, awning or outdoor equipment),
- whereas discreet overnight parking without deploying any equipment is often better tolerated.
To avoid any issues, choose isolated areas, stay discreet and ask for permission whenever a place appears to be private property. Albanians are known for their warm hospitality towards travellers, especially when visitors behave respectfully.

What budget should you plan for an Albania road trip?
Good news: Albania is one of the most affordable countries in Europe for travelling by motorhome or campervan! Of course, your budget will depend on your travel style, the season and the type of accommodation you choose, but here is an average estimate to help you prepare your road trip.
⛽ Fuel
Fuel prices in Albania are generally slightly lower than in Western Europe, although they may vary depending on the region and tourist season. On average, expect to pay:
- Diesel: between €1.60 and €1.90 per litre
- Petrol: between €1.70 and €2.00 per litre
Petrol stations are common along major roads, but they can become much rarer in mountain regions. Make sure to refuel before heading into more remote areas!
🚐 Campsites and motorhome service areas
Albania offers many welcoming family-run campsites at very reasonable prices:
- Campsites: between €10 and €25 per night for two people with vehicle
- Motorhome parking areas or small overnight spots: from €5
- Wild camping: often tolerated if local rules and nature are respected
💡 Average daily budget
On average, a couple travelling by motorhome can expect to spend:
- Budget travel: around €35 to €50 per day
- Comfortable budget: around €60 to €90 per day
👉 These estimates generally include everyday expenses such as fuel, campsite or parking fees, groceries, restaurants, as well as certain activities and tourist visits.
Albania is therefore an ideal destination for enjoying a long motorhome road trip without breaking the bank!
When is the best time to visit Albania by motorhome?
Albania enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate. The best period to travel is usually between April and early October, when temperatures are warmer and conditions are ideal for a road trip.
- ☀️ July and August are perfect for enjoying the beaches of the Albanian Riviera, while spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and quieter conditions for exploring the mountains and inland regions.
- 🌧️ December, January and February are the rainiest months, especially in northern and mountainous areas where some roads can become more difficult to access.

Practical Tips for Travelling Through Albania by Motorhome
Before hitting the road, here are a few useful tips to help you make the most of your motorhome adventure in Albania!
- Allow more travel time than expected
- Even though distances may appear short on a map, some roads are narrow, mountainous or poorly maintained. It is better to avoid planning overly long driving days.

- The local currency is the Albanian lek (ALL). Credit cards are accepted in larger cities and some restaurants, but it is still recommended to carry cash, especially in villages and rural areas.
- Prepare for limited network coverage in remote regions
- Mobile coverage is generally good, but some mountain areas may have weaker signal. Downloading offline GPS maps before your trip is highly recommended.
- Refuel before entering mountain areas
- Petrol stations are common around major cities and along main roads, but they become rarer in remote regions.
- Prefer arriving during daylight hours
- If you plan to spend the night while wild camping or staying in a small village, try to arrive before dark to better identify suitable places and drive more safely.
- Enjoy Albanian hospitality
- Hospitality is deeply rooted in Albanian culture! Van and motorhome travellers are usually warmly welcomed, especially when they take the time to interact respectfully with locals.
